There are still lots of work to be done in the church. Not only in terms of infrastructure, but primarily on social services.
People may think that such work should be left to the government but in truth, it is a ministry where one can express his love for another, more particularly a stranger.
The venue or fitting time to serve is not relevant. What is important is anywhere and at any time you unselfishly give yourself in order to benefit others will surely please God.
This should only be your intention and nothing else.
REFLECTION
One of the first ministries I got involved with in the church is the Social Service Ministry. Here, we look upon the welfare of the poor in terms of extending health, education, livelihood, employment and legal assistances to them.
Unfortunately, the ministry has not grown in terms of membership and up until now, many of its services are still un-institutionalized except for the parish medical clinic. Recently, we took in five scholars for high school and we are currently discussing on how to sustain the program.
With the upcoming elections for the “Barangay”, some are wondering whether I will shift serving the poor though the government by seeking an elective post, or continue serving through the church. I guess the Lord answered my prayers; it is not relevant where I should serve, what is important is I serve with all sincerity of heart.
PRAYER
Father God, human thoughts in terms of aspirations can sometimes be deceiving. Intentions to serve can be construed as ambitions or aspirations to gain position or power. A supposed public servant becomes an influential and powerful politician who no longer sees the value of service, but the material benefits of the title entrusted to him.
Today, I pray for all those you have chosen to be leaders in this field of endeavor. May they find enlightenment on the responsibilities given them of serving others most especially the poor, and not look on the material gains that will benefit them. In Jesus Name, I pray. Amen.
